Ah yes, I love the RPG genre. I'm an avid fan but to be honest I think the quality of RPGs has been in decline over the last decade.
I lean more to the tactical RPGs because I find them the most fun and incorporate the most strategy when playing.
Since we're rattling off lists, my favorites include:
- Final Fantasy Tactics
- FF7, 10 & 12
- Chrono Trigger
- Secret of Mana
- Vandal Hearts
- Suikoden 1 & 2
- Breath of Fire 3
- Fallout 1 & 2
- Wild Arms (The first one only)
Now those are just my favs, the list of ones I've played is too extensive to recollect. I really enjoyed Rainbow Moon a Game we've both played recently.
As far as some of the other newer releases, I just haven't been very impressed. I greatly disliked FF13 but XIII-2 is kinda growing on me (playing it now), mainly because of the story lines and the battle system, I feel like you're just mashing x the whole time, with an occasional L1 switch. I'm not a fan of Bethesda's Engine so The new Fallouts (3 & Vegas) left alot to be desired and I had little appreciation for Oblivion or Skyrim. (Skyrim became such a huge fad, it just makes me sad to see that what the new community wants).
Disgaea 3 was pretty fun, but it wasn't great enough to get me to play 4, the system just seemed to be missing something, and was a bit too extensive.
And Diablo 3, the most awaited action RPG to grace the last decade, fell flat on it's face during the release. In addition, while some have managed to stay intrigued and continued to play through it multiple times, I got through 2x and that was more than enough. It just became a constant farming mission after you beat it on hard, and while finding new equipment is fun, it does get old after 80 hours.
The game I'd love to see come out is FFT being remade on a next gen console, with an extended storyline (but inline with the original), additional side quests, more classes, updated graphics, magic, and sprites, more locations, and a PvP system. If they did that, I think I'd just lock my doors and order pizza for the next year or so.
The real question is what's next? I have a feeling Bethesda will put out the next big hit, but I'd love to see a SquareEnix game that isn't aimed at younger teenagers, the japanese, or girls. They can leave the sentimental emotions at the door (I prefer internal struggles over gooey love stories).
There is so much can be done with these newer consoles, yet I don't feel any gaming company has really taken the next big step to set themselves apart.
Anyone, back to the OP, I'm an avid fan of RPGs I just think they need some work.
